Other
Transformational Contribution Initiatives
Beyond the sectors of
health, skills development and education, The Darling Trust also makes a
difference in other ways:
-
Senior
Citizen Support.
The elderly are invited to Evita se Perron once a month for a
treat of free tea, a scone and a movie in the little theatre.
One should see how well they dress to honour the occasion,
which is a highlight on their calendar.
The Groeneweide Old Age Home receives their daily newspapers
free of charge, courtesy of The Darling Trust.
-
An
annual Talent Show is organised to showcase local talent and
bring the community together. Jarred
Blake, who participated in such a talent show at the tender age of
nine, was then ‘discovered’, has since attended a private school
and at the age of sixteen he has come second in the world in his
singing examinations in London.
-
Pieter-Dirk Uys donated a piece of land to The Darling Trust for the
establishment of a community garden.
The community garden is a first for Darling and is located on a piece
of land that has been used for years by the community as a thoroughfare on
their way home from the town centre. This once barren piece of land now
proudly boasts 50 additional young indigenous trees and a number of
seating benches and tables. The tables and benches were kindly donated by
the well-known Pepino Group. The garden has truly become a vibrant focus area.
-
Excursions
are regularly arranged to broaden the horizons of Darling inhabitants.
Socially relevant outings are regularly undertaken, e.g. children are
taken to see the Zip-Zap circus, the art children attended the Picasso
exhibition in Cape Town, the music children attended the Youth
Orchestra performance in the Cape Town City Hall, youngsters are taken
to experience productions in the Baxter theatre, for example
‘Suip’ and ‘Songbook’, too many to list all here.
-
A
Violence Free Darling is
another Darling Trust project. The
artwork was commissioned and sponsored for brochures that are to be
displayed on every fridge in every Darling household.
These brochures contain a Family Charter in which family
members agree how to act within the family, and all the emergency
numbers of who to contact when things go wrong, are listed.
